Reflecting on the 2024 National Conference Opening Ceremony: A Timeless Message for a New Year
As we step into a new year, I find myself reflecting on the moments and words that guide us through times of uncertainty and hope. One of those moments for me has been revisiting the opening ceremony from last summer’s NACRJ conference. In the months since the conference, I have watched the ceremony several times. Each viewing offers new insights and a renewed sense of purpose, but rewatching it last week, right after New Year’s, felt particularly profound.
Although the ceremony was originally created as a welcome to the conference, its messages transcend that context. Watching it at the start of a new calendar year, I was struck by how relevant and grounding its words are as I contemplate the year ahead.
We are only a few weeks into the new year, and already, we have faced significant challenges as a society. The acts of terrorism in New Orleans and Las Vegas, as well as the devastating wildfires in California, have brought pain and sorrow to many. In moments like these, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world. Yet, listening to the words of the opening ceremony reminded me of the resilience we carry within us and the collective strength we have when we come together in community.
As I watched the ceremony again, I found myself pausing, rewinding, and taking notes on the powerful messages shared. There are so many incredible words of wisdom within that video, and I believe they have something to offer each of us as we navigate the complexities of this new year. Even if you were not at the conference, I encourage you to watch the video and listen deeply. Consider how its messages can serve as a guide for the year ahead.
I want to express my deep gratitude to Drums No Guns Foundation, Lyla June, and everyone involved in creating and bringing the opening ceremony to life. Their work resulted in a piece that resonates far beyond the conference, offering a sense of grounding and inspiration that feels especially meaningful now. To me, this ceremony is more than an event; it is a timeless reminder of the values we hold and the vision we strive for.
If you would like to experience the ceremony for yourself, you can watch the video here. Additionally, other videos from last summer’s conference are available on our 2024 Conference page.
As we move forward into this new year, let us carry with us the wisdom and hope that emerged from that ceremony. May we find strength in community and purpose in the work ahead.
Happy New Year to all,
Joel Friesz
