NACRJ Seeking New Executive Director

Position Summary

The Executive Director leads and manages NACRJ and acts as strategic communicator of NACRJ's programs to funders, media, staff, and the community. The Executive Director is responsible for implementing the internal and external objectives related to the organization's mission and develops the internal structure and budget to support NACRJ's continued growth. The Executive Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of NACRJ's activities including membership recruitment and management, conference oversight and planning, grant writing, donor cultivation, annual budget, planned giving, special events and capital campaigns. The Executive Director works closely with NACRJ employees and Board of Directors in development and fundraising endeavors.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Fund Raising

    • Develop a long-range, sustainable, and diverse funding plan to ensure the implementation and success of NACRJ's programs and strategic goals
    • Develop, maintain, and grow relationships with foundations and major donors
    • Proactively develop funding proposals, prepare grant applications, and initiate and coordinate fundraising appeals, donor cultivation events, and other activities
    • Actively seek new revenue sources – government, corporate, private foundations, and individuals
    • Monitor contract compliance and grant objectives, and report to funders o Prepare development reports for the NACRJ Board of Directors
  • Financial Management

    • Prepare annual budget and development plan to meet NACRJ's financial needs o Assist fiscal management of financial and administrative procedures in order to maintain fiscally sound programs and accounting systems
    • Assist with any scheduled audits, prepare expenditure reports, and all other fiscal reports
    • Regularly monitor budget and oversee banking transactions
  • Human Resources Management

    • Assist in human resources management
    • Provide leadership and direction for the organization
    • Hire and supervise staff and independent contractors to ensure operational effectiveness
    • Develop a human resources handbook, ensure compliance with all personnel policies
    • Provide for professional development activities that motivate performance, upgrade skills, and keep employees abreast of best community and restorative justice practices in field
    • Promote a relational organizational culture that fosters trust, collaboration, and communication
  • NACRJ Board of Directors

    • Work with NACRJ Board of Directors to maintain and develop an engaged, informed, energized, and diverse Board
    • Coordinate, plan, attend and participate in Board of Directors meetings
    • Assist in recruiting and orienting new Board of Directors members
    • Engage Board of Directors in development and program activities
  • Community and Government Relations

    • Represent NACRJ at public functions
    • Participate in conferences, convenings, community meetings, and other outreach activities to promote NACRJ's mission and increase its visibility and influence
    • Establish and maintain productive relationships with local and national community and restorative justice organizations
    • Respond to press and media inquiries
  • Program Implementation, Oversight, and Evaluation

    • Facilitate program design and development as appropriate
    • Maintain familiarity with NACRJ's programs and objectives
    • Ensure compatibility of program decisions with NACRJ's mission
    • Communicate with NACRJ's Board of Directors, employees, volunteers and the community about programmatic initiatives
    • Design, prepare, deliver and provide oversight for execution of national conference o Facilitate and oversee program evaluation


  • Required

    • MA, MS, MSW, JD, or Ph.D. degree in related field or equivalent experience
    • Must embrace the mission of community and restorative justice with an expansive equity lens.
    • Strong interpersonal skills.
    • Have knowledge and experience in fund raising techniques, particularly foundation grant writing
    • Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers.
    • Have the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships.
    • Be a "self-starter" and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.
    • Be organized and exhibit "follow through" on tasks and goals.
    • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability.
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
    • At least 5 years of experience working in a community and/or restorative justice position; knowledge of community and restorative justice principles and practices.
    • At least 5 years of experience working with ethnically and socially diverse populations.
  • Preferred

    • Non-Profit Experience of at least 10 years with 5 years minimum experience in leadership and professional fundraising.
    • Experience with major gift fundraising.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate all conference planning and deliver support service
  2. Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to establish effective communications with them.
  3. Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
  4. Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
  5. Build the individual donor giving program with a focus on major gifts and multiple year commitments from institutional donors.
  6. Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives.
  7. Direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives.
  8. Coordinate fund raising special events.
  9. Oversee prospect research.
  10. Write, provide oversight of and submit periodic grant progress reports.
  11. Work closely with the Board of Directors and NACRJ employees.
  12. Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about NACRJ with the community.
  13. Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems.
  14. Supervise and collaborate with other staff.
  15. Oversee creation of publications to support organizational and fundraising activities.
  16. Maintain gift recognition programs.
  17. Demonstrate professional conduct at all times.
  18. Perform other related duties as requested.
