How To Give an Apology: A Learning Lab
Center for Restorative Justice & Peacemaking
January 31, 2023
Apologizing is one element of being accountable for the harm we do. In this learning lab participants will learn and then practice the elements of a genuine apology through small group exercises and reflection. Practicing small apologies helps you build reliability and trust in your everyday relationships, instead of freezing, making excuses, or simply hoping a problem goes away. Participants will focus on apologies to people we care about, at the level of smaller hurts, misunderstandings, and breaches of trust.

Restorative Practices for Educators
International Institute for Restorative Practices
March 7-8, 2023
During this two-day introductory online experience, you will learn fundamental theory and practices for engaging with students, staff and parents in your school setting.
Topics include how to set high expectations while being supportive, how to provide direct feedback and ask questions that foster accountability, and the most effective methods to resolve common conflicts.
You will also learn to facilitate circles, an essential process for creating a positive learning environment and school culture. Circles may be used to build social capital, resolve social problems and respond when harm occurs.
Additionally, our instructors address many issues related to building relationships and community while teaching virtually during COVID-19. Concepts include how and when to have one-on-one conversations; the effective use of informal time as students gather; and setting norms for running virtual circles. Restorative Justice Conferencing
International Institute for Restorative Practices
March 9-10, 2023
Incidents of conflict, wrongdoing and harm occur throughout society — in schools, workplaces, college campuses, neighborhoods and families. The restorative justice conference provides a template to engage with those who cause and experience harm, along with related community.
All kinds of incidents, from arguments to bullying, racial incidents to property crimes and violence can be addressed in this format. During this event, you will learn the steps needed to facilitate these meaningful, healing conversations.
Whether or not you are responsible for conducting restorative justice conferences, the insights gained will help you address conflicts in everyday settings. The elements of the conference can be broken out to inform less formal processes — including restorative circles, small impromptu conversations and one-on-one interactions. Skills taught include monitoring your own reactions in stressful situations, listening with empathy and creating shared understanding among conflicting parties.
